Explore the Wool Track

Big Wool Bales, Hamilton, VicThis section of our site is intended to help your voyage of exploration along Australia's wool track focused on particular areas.

The section is very much under development as we experiment with different approaches.

In our experience, people get maximum enjoyment when they can put what they are seeing into a context. Venice is not just canals and narrow streets, but a total historical and cultural experience. A French or Australian wine tour is not just the vineyards and the wine, but the total combination of history, landscape, people, attractions and food with the vineyards and the wine.  Nundle Woollen Mill

This type of combination is presently hard to achieve with wool.

While individual towns and cities such as Hamilton or Geelong (site of the National Wool Musuem) in Victoria or Nundle in NSW have developed specific wool based attractions or events, in many places wool is simply one sub-element in the visitor experience. In many cases this largely reflects the fact that wool's impact has been so pervasive.

Street Scene, Glenn InnesThis problem is further complicated by the way most localities focus on their immediate area, making it difficult for visitors to fit things into a broader context.

We are trying to overcome these problems where possible by presenting the wool experience in a broader regional context, bringing together different linked localities.

In doing so, we are also trying to link wool to other aspects of the life and history of the region.

We chose the New England region of NSW as our first test of this approach because New England is a recognised wool growing area where wool has had a very major impact. It is also a little easier because some of us have direct knowledge of the area.

This first test has given us some valuable experience. We will now start adding other areas. However, the process is reasonably time consuming in both research and writing, so this will take us a little time.
