Boarding Schools Regional NSW

The following table lists schools with boarding facilities by location in regional NSW. 

NSW is a large geographic area with substantial population concentrations outside the Sydney metropolitan area. The distribution of schools with boarding facilities across regional NSW reflects this as well as the state's history. In broad terms we can break schools into several groups:

• Those established in educational centres usually linked to higher altitude climate (cool climates were seen as healthy) servicing a geographically distributed market. This includes:
  • Armidale.  Armidale began as an administrative centre for a colonial territory extending into what is now Queensland. This plus the city's tablelands location led to the establishment of a number of schools servicing a market from Sydney in the south into western Queensland and the Pacific.   • Bathurst. Bathurst was established as the first centre after European settlers crossed the Blue Mountains. Like Armidale, the city quickly became a major religious, administrative and educational centre.
  • Southern Tablelands (Moss Vale, Mittagong) . The Southern Tablelands' close proximity to Sydney made the area a city playground. This led to the establishment of a number of schools.
• Major centres such as Tamworth and Albury whose size justified schools servicing the surrounding areas.
• Special purpose schools including especially the Farrer and and Yanco Agricultural High Schools.
