Barry Brebner founded Workabout Australia in 1996 to provide information about employment and working holidays in regional Australia.
His interest in the area was formed during a thirty year career with the Australian Government's Commonwealth Employment Service (CES) and the Department of Employment, Education and Training. Barry learned his trade at the CES's Shepparton Office where he supervised job opportunities for the fruit harvest of the Goulburn Valley before moving on to Hamilton and then Dubbo.
Workabout Australia began as as a guide to employment and working holidays. Originally published featuring 78 locations, the latest edition covers 153 locations in all Australian states, providing information about each location including seasonal employment, recruitment details, accommodation, transport and tourist attractions.
Following establishment of the Guide Barry founded the Workabout Australia Club with its own web site to share information and provide specific advice to club members. Tradesman's Trek followed to provide information to tradespeople interested in the combination of travel and work. Barry then established an employment listing service.
The unifying element in Workabout Australia is Barry's fascination with regional, especially outback, Australia.
